Teaching EAL learners: talk for iQTS candidates (Uni of Sunderland)

I was invited by Uni of Sunderland to talk to their iQTS candidates about EAL teaching strategies. I had an open brief, so I opted to share some more general tips for early careers teachers. I talked about:

  • Teaching with empathy
  • Making learning more accessible
  • Introducing new vocabulary

There was so much I wanted to delve into but I thought I should keep things really practical rather than get bogged down in specifics (e.g. the rabbit hole of translanguaging) or the ‘EAL vs multilingual learners’ terminology debate (on my radar a lot recently). I figured that if things were well-received then a recording of this talk could cover some useful basics for future cohorts first, then we might be able to do some more specific seminars/workshops on various topics down the line. You never know.

Anyhow, here are the slides I used, with practical examples taken from recent practice. Adri Szlapak was kind enough to chip in with various examples too. If you’d like a version including speaker notes so you know the type of stuff I mentioned then just get in touch.
